Sewer Services

The sewer line is the one pipe every drain in the building depends on, and the one you cannot see. When it fails, the symptoms show up everywhere except the actual problem: slow drains across the house, backups in the lowest fixtures, odors, soggy spots in the yard.

Sewer work is diagnosis-driven. A camera inspection shows what is actually happening inside the line (roots, grease, a bellied section, a collapse), and that picture decides between cleaning, a spot repair, trenchless rehabilitation or full replacement. Each option has its own page below.

Signs You Need This Service

Signs the problem is the sewer line, not a single drain:

  • Multiple drains slow or blocked at once. Fixtures share one exit. When tubs, toilets and floor drains struggle together, the shared line is restricted.
  • Backups at the lowest points. Wastewater appearing in basement drains, tubs or showers is the classic pressure-relief pattern of a blocked sewer.
  • Gurgling toilets and drains. Air trapped by a partial blockage escapes through the nearest water seal.
  • Sewage odor indoors or in the yard. Persistent odor points at a breach, a dried or breached trap, or a failing line.
  • Unusually green or soggy yard strips. A leaking underground line fertilizes and saturates the soil above it.

Common Causes

What actually fails in sewer lines:

  • Root intrusion. Tree roots find joints and hairline cracks, then grow into root masses that catch everything. Common in clay-pipe neighborhoods.
  • Grease and buildup. Years of accumulated grease, scale and sludge narrow the line until normal use blocks it.
  • Pipe material aging. Cast iron corrodes and scales, clay cracks and shifts at joints, Orangeburg deforms. Each vintage material has a known failure mode.
  • Bellied or offset sections. Settling soil creates low spots that collect waste, or shifts pipe segments out of alignment at the joints.
  • Collapse. The end state of corrosion, crushing loads or material failure: the line physically loses its shape and nothing passes.

Service Details & What's Included

How sewer work is scoped:

  • Camera inspection first. Serious sewer recommendations begin with video evidence: the location, depth and nature of the problem, documented before any digging is proposed.
  • Cleaning when the pipe is sound. Roots and buildup in an intact line are cleared mechanically or with hydro jetting, restoring flow without construction.
  • Trenchless when the pipe needs structure. Pipe lining and pipe bursting rehabilitate or replace the line through small access points, preserving landscaping and driveways where conditions allow.
  • Excavation when geometry demands it. Collapsed or badly offset sections and unsupported soil conditions still call for open repair, and honest scoping says so up front.
  • What affects the cost. Depth, length, access, material, the chosen method and restoration needs. A written scope after camera diagnosis is the norm, not a favor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it's my sewer line or the city's?

The line from the building to the property boundary (and often to the tap at the main) is typically the owner's responsibility; the municipal main itself belongs to the utility. A camera locates the failure point, which determines whose problem it is.

Do I always need a camera inspection?

For recurring backups, multi-drain symptoms or any repair decision, yes. It replaces guesswork with a documented picture, and it protects you from paying for repairs the line does not need.

What is trenchless sewer repair?

Methods that fix the line without digging its full length: cured-in-place lining builds a new pipe inside the old one; pipe bursting pulls a new pipe through while breaking the old. Both need suitable pipe condition and access points.

Can roots in the sewer line be permanently fixed?

Cutting the roots restores flow, but they return through the same defects. A permanent fix seals the entry points, usually by lining the affected section or replacing it.

Why do backups keep returning after clearing?

Because clearing removes the blockage, not the cause. Bellied sections, roots and deteriorated pipe keep recreating the same problem, and that pattern is exactly what camera diagnosis is for.

How long does sewer line replacement take?

It depends on depth, length and method: trenchless work often completes faster than open excavation, which adds restoration time. The written scope should state the expected duration for your specific line.

Diagnose Your Sewer Problem

Describe the pattern: which fixtures back up, how often, and any history of clearing. Recurring symptoms earn a camera inspection before anyone proposes digging.
