Water pressure is a system property: the street supplies it, the pressure-reducing valve tames it, pipes deliver it, and every valve in between can help or hurt. That is why 'low pressure' is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The fix depends entirely on where the pressure is lost.

Pressure symptoms and what they point to:

  • Weak flow everywhere. A failing PRV, a partially closed or failing main valve, a supply-side restriction. The whole-house pattern points at the entry path.
  • Weak flow at one fixture. That fixture's aerator, cartridge or stop valve, not a house problem.
  • Pressure drops when anything else runs. Classic undersized or restricted supply: flow, not static pressure, is the limit.
  • Pressure spikes or steady overpressure. A failed PRV passing street pressure into the house, which is hard on every appliance, hose and seal downstream.
  • Banging pipes (water hammer). Valves closing against momentum without arrestors, or overpressure making the whole system slam.
  • Relief valve dripping at the water heater. Often thermal expansion with no working expansion tank: a pressure-system fault wearing a water-heater costume.

Common Causes

The usual mechanical culprits:

  • PRV wear. Pressure-reducing valves drift and fail with age, both toward too little pressure and too much.
  • Seized or failing shutoff valves. Main valves and fixture stops that have not moved in years seize open, weep, or will not close when it matters.
  • Restriction in the line. Corroded galvanized pipe, fouled cartridges and clogged screens narrow the path regardless of street pressure.
  • Thermal expansion without control. Heated water expands; in a closed system without a working expansion tank, pressure climbs until something relieves it.
  • A hidden leak. Escaping water reads as pressure loss. When diagnosis smells a leak, it routes to leak detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is water pressure low in the whole house?

The candidates in order: a failing PRV, a main valve not fully open or failing, supply-side restriction, or corroded distribution piping. Two gauge readings, street side and house side, usually split the problem in half immediately.

Why is pressure low at only one fixture?

Because the problem belongs to that fixture: clogged aerator, fouled cartridge, or a stop valve that is not fully open or failing. Whole-house causes cannot single out one faucet.

What is the difference between static and dynamic pressure?

Static is pressure with no water moving; dynamic is what survives when fixtures run. Good static with collapsing dynamic means restriction: the system holds pressure but cannot deliver flow.

Can a PRV cause both low and high pressure?

Yes. A worn PRV can throttle too much, creep upward, or oscillate. If house pressure no longer matches its setting, in either direction, the valve is the first suspect.

When does a booster pump make sense?

When the street itself delivers too little for the building, verified by measurement, and restrictions have been ruled out. Boosting a house that actually has a restriction just pressurizes the problem.

When is a shutoff-valve problem urgent?

Before anything else fails: a main valve that will not close means the next leak cannot be isolated. A seized or weeping main shutoff is quiet, cheap urgency. Fix it on your schedule, not a flood's.
