Repair is the right call more often than valve folklore suggests: stems, packing and washers are serviceable on many designs. The judgment is knowing which faults rebuild well and which valves have earned the replacement page instead.
How a Plumber Diagnoses the Problem
How valve repair is judged and done:
- Design decides repairability. Compression and globe valves rebuild well; washers, seats and packing are standard parts. Gate valves rebuild poorly once the gate wears. Ball valves rarely fail internally at all; their faults are usually packing or handle hardware.
- Isolate upstream first. Repairing a valve means working on an open line. The upstream isolation plan (another valve, the curb stop, or the meter) is arranged before disassembly, not discovered during it.
- Rebuild and prove. New packing, washer or stem goes in; the valve is then operated through full cycles and checked under pressure. A repaired valve that has not been proven is a rumor.
- Call the honest borderline. An old multi-turn valve needing its second repair is auditioning for replacement. Saying so, with both prices, is part of the job.

Can packing be fixed without replacing the whole valve?
Usually yes. Packing is a serviceable seal around the stem. A quarter-turn of the packing nut solves light weeping; full repacking handles the rest. It is the classic small repair that prevents a corroded mess later.
Why does the valve leak only when I operate it?
Because operation is what stresses the stem seal: packing that hardened in one position cracks when the stem finally moves. The valve was already marginal. Turning it was the exam, not the cause.
Can a gate valve be repaired?
Its packing and handle, yes; its gate, rarely worth it. Worn gates and seats inside old gate valves do not restore reliably, and a 'repaired' main shutoff you cannot trust is worse than none. Failed gates are where the replacement conversation starts.
When is replacement safer than repair?
When the valve guards something critical (the house main), when the body or seat is worn rather than the serviceable parts, or when it has failed before. Critical-position valves get the reliability standard, not the minimum-cost standard.
Does valve repair require shutting off the water?
Upstream of the patient, yes. Packing nuts sometimes tolerate careful live adjustment, but any disassembly needs the line dead. Planning that isolation is part of the visit; for main valves it means coordinating the curb stop or meter.
