Why does my pump hum but not pump?

Something is stopping the impeller or the start circuit: a jam, a failed capacitor, or an airlock. Running it that way cooks the motor; cut power and have it opened up.

Why does my sump pump run all the time?

Either it cannot win, with inflow at or above capacity, or it is being fooled: a stuck float, or a failed check valve letting the same water fall back and get pumped forever. Diagnosis is quick; the wrong answer is ignoring it until the motor quits.

When is a failed pump an emergency?

When water is rising: a dead sump pump during inflow, or a failed sewage pump with the basin filling. A pump that failed dry is urgent scheduling; a pump that failed wet is now.

Are float switches and check valves separate repairs?

Yes, and they are the most common ones. A failed switch or check valve can mimic total pump death; both are routine replacements that cost a fraction of a new pump. Diagnosis distinguishes them before anything gets swapped.

Do I need a backup sump pump?

Ask what happens if the primary fails during the storm that took the power out, because that is the exact scenario backups exist for. Battery backups cover outages; water-powered backups (where pressure and code allow) cover long ones. Basements with history answer this question themselves.
