Sump Pump Repair

A sump pump communicates entirely through behavior, and its three complaints each point somewhere different. Running nonstop tells one story, rapid on-off cycling another, humming without pumping a third. Reading the behavior correctly is most of the repair, and it regularly saves the pump: a large share of 'dead pump' calls end with an inexpensive float or check valve.

  • Runs continuously. Either genuinely losing to inflow, or fooled: a float jammed against the pit wall, a failed check valve recycling the same water forever, or an undersized pump for the season.
  • Short-cycles rapidly. On-off-on within seconds: check valve gone (the column falls back and refills the pit), float set too tight, or a pit too small for the pump's appetite.
  • Hums but moves nothing. Jammed impeller (gravel is the classic), airlock in the volute, or a failed start capacitor. Cut power before anything else; humming cooks motors.
  • Will not start at all. Power, float, switch, motor, tested in that order, cheapest first.
  • Bangs when it stops. Water hammer at the check valve. A spring-loaded quiet check ends the nightly thud.

How a Plumber Diagnoses the Problem

The repair repertoire:

  • Float and switch service. Tethered floats tangle, vertical floats stick, switches wear. These are the most-replaced components in sump work, and the cheapest.
  • Check valve replacement. One valve cures both short-cycling and the eternal-running illusion; installed oriented, accessible and quiet-type where hammer annoys.
  • Clearing and cleaning. Impellers freed of debris, intake screens cleared, the pit itself cleaned of the sediment that feeds jams.
  • Discharge path checks. A frozen or blocked discharge line makes a healthy pump 'fail'. The outside end of the pipe is part of the system and part of the diagnosis.
  • The honest verdict. Motor failures and worn-out pumps get named as replacements, with the repair-versus-replace math shown. Patching a dying pump protecting a finished basement helps nobody.

Why does my sump pump run all the time?

First split: is water actually leaving? If the pit empties and refills endlessly, suspect a failed check valve recycling the discharge column, then real inflow that outmatches the pump. If the pit is dry and it still runs, the float or switch is lying to the motor.

Why does it short-cycle?

The rhythm gives it away: cycles seconds apart mean the water the pump just pushed is falling straight back (a check valve job), or the float band is set so narrow the pit refills instantly. Both are quick fixes that also rescue the motor from its worst duty pattern.

It hums but doesn't pump. Is it dead?

Not yet, but it is dying while it hums. Kill power first. A jammed impeller or airlock frees and the pump lives; a failed capacitor is replaceable on many models. Humming that persists after clearing is the motor's farewell.

Can the float or check valve be replaced without a new pump?

Routinely. Both are standard serviceable parts, and together they account for a remarkable share of 'my pump died' calls. That is exactly why diagnosis should precede any pump quote.

When is repair the wrong answer?

Failed motors, cracked housings, and aged pumps with heavy duty behind them: repairing those buys months at the price of years. The behavior test still pays: it tells you honestly whether you are fixing a component or nursing a retiree.
