  • Grease and non-degradables. Grease, wipes and hygiene products fill tanks fast and biomat fields faster.
  • Hydraulic overload. More water than the system's design (added bedrooms, leaking toilets running for months) drowns the field.
  • Physical damage. Vehicles over tanks and fields, roots into lines, crushed or offset pipes.
  • Age. Steel tanks rust through, old fields saturate; every system has a design life the inspection can estimate.

How do I know if the tank or the drainfield is failing?

The tank fails by filling or breaking; levels and inspection show it. The field fails by not absorbing: surfacing effluent, odors and backups with a tank that pumps out fine. The distinction matters because one is maintenance and the other is a project.

Is slow drainage always a septic problem?

No. A house on septic still has ordinary drain clogs. One slow fixture is a drain problem; every fixture slow, or backups tracking water use, points at the system. Diagnosis starts at the tank.

What causes sewage odor around a septic system?

Escaping gases from failed seals or vents, an overfull tank, or effluent surfacing over a failing field. Persistent outdoor odor is a symptom worth an inspection, not an air freshener.

How often should a septic system be pumped and inspected?

It depends on tank size, household size and habits, which is why the honest answer is a measured one: sludge levels at pumping set the next interval. Regulated inspections (point-of-sale, jurisdiction programs) run on their own schedules.

Can a drainfield be repaired, or must it be replaced?

Fields drowning from a fixable cause (a failed baffle sending solids over, a leak overloading them, compaction) can often recover once the cause is fixed and the field rests. A field saturated after decades of service is usually at end of life; soil testing tells which story you are in.

What should never go into a septic system?

Grease, wipes (including 'flushable'), hygiene products, coffee grounds, paint, solvents and drain-cleaning chemicals in quantity. The system runs on bacteria; the list above either clogs it or kills the workforce.
