Basement Bathroom Plumbing
A basement bathroom is decided at the elevation of the building drain. Fixtures high enough to fall into it at code slope make the project trenching and pipe; fixtures below it bring in a pump, with a basin, vent and circuit behind it. Most of the cost follows from that measurement.

How a Plumber Diagnoses the Problem
How feasibility is settled before the saw comes out:
- Elevation first. The building drain's invert is found at a cleanout or one floor opening and measured against each fixture. Under the 2021 International Plumbing Code, where adopted, drains 2-1/2 inches and smaller fall 1/4 inch per foot, 3 to 6 inches 1/8 (Table 704.1); run length times slope is the gravity question.
- Gravity is not optional where it works. 2021 IPC 712.1 sends only drainage that cannot reach the sewer by gravity to a covered, vented sump and, in new work, forbids feeding a sump with piping that could drain by gravity.
- What the slab decides. A slab on ground is at least 3-1/2 inches thick under the 2021 International Residential Code, where adopted (R506.1). Every gravity trench cuts it, and so does an ejector basin, at least 18 inches across and 24 deep under 2021 IPC 712.3.2, fed by gravity.
- The backwater check. Where the finished floor is below the next upstream public manhole cover, 2021 IPC 714.1 (Section 715 in the 2015 edition) requires a backwater valve for those fixtures; fixtures above it must not discharge through one.

Three drainage paths, and what writes the number:
- Path one: gravity through the slab. Trench, DWV pipe at code slope with vents to the stack, pipe protected where it crosses concrete rather than embedded in it (a MyBuildingPermit checklist line for Washington State jurisdictions), test, inspection, concrete.
- Path two: the sewage ejector. Fixtures below the drain feed a basin in the slab: sealed lid, pipe vent, check valve plus full-open shutoff on the discharge (2021 IPC 712.2). This page decides the basin is needed and roughs fixtures to it; building it is the Sewage Ejector Pump Installation page.
- Path three: the macerating unit. An above-floor macerating or up-flush unit pumps from behind the toilet: no basin, no slab cut. 2021 IPC 712.4.1 accepts it when it complies with ASME A112.3.4/CSA B45.9 and follows the manufacturer's instructions, so the maker's limits apply. Liberty Pumps' Ascent II manual takes one water closet per unit, all fixtures on one floor and a pipe vent, never an air admittance valve. - Permits and the inspection before concrete. A permit is the model-code default for altering a plumbing system (2021 IPC 106.1). Maple Grove, Minnesota, requires separate building, plumbing, electrical and mechanical permits for a basement bathroom. Under-slab pipe is capped, filled to 10 feet of head for 15 minutes (2021 IRC P2503.5.1, 2021 IPC 312.2) and inspected before the pour.
- Trades, and what writes the number. The pump circuit is electrical scope: Zoeller's Qwik Jon Ultima 203 instructions call for a separately protected GFCI circuit wired by an electrician; concrete, waterproofing and finishes are other trades. The number is written by slab work, whether a lift is needed at all, distance to the stack, the vent's route through finished space, fixture count and their code clearances, and whether an existing rough-in survives inspection.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every basement bathroom need a pump?
No. Drains that reach the building drain at the fall the 2021 IPC, where adopted, requires go by gravity; 2021 IPC 712.1 forbids sending gravity-capable drainage to a sump in new work. The pump is for fixtures below the drain.
Can an existing basement rough-in be reused?
When it lands where the layout wants it, is sized and vented for the fixtures, and is sound. A stub a camera shows cracked or bellied is replaced; whatever stays is tested with the new work.
Does adding a basement bathroom mean cutting the slab?
On the gravity and ejector paths, yes unless an existing rough-in is reused: drains run below at least 3-1/2 inches of concrete (2021 IRC R506.1) and a basin needs a pit of at least 18 by 24 inches (2021 IPC 712.3.2). The macerating path pumps from above the floor, within its maker's limits.
How are venting and sewer backflow handled below grade?
Every fixture is vented per code; sumps cannot use an air admittance valve under 2021 IPC 918.8 without an engineered vent. Fixtures below the next upstream public manhole cover drain through a backwater valve (2021 IPC 714.1, 2021 IRC P3008.1), fixtures above it must not, and no valve or pump makes a basement floodproof.
Who handles the pump and its wiring if one is needed?
The plumber decides the basin is needed and roughs fixtures toward it; the basin, its discharge and vent, sizing, check valve and alarm belong to the Sewage Ejector Pump Installation page. The circuit is an electrician's, per Zoeller's instructions, on a separate electrical permit in Maple Grove, Minnesota.

Describe the layout, any existing stubs or cleanouts, the main's exit if known, prior backups and the fixtures planned; the visit measures the elevation and turns the sketch into a scope. A basin at alarm is a pump repair call and sewage on the floor an emergency call, not this form.
