Collapsed Sewer Line Repair

How collapse announces itself:

• Total blockage that equipment cannot pass. Cables stop hard at the same footage every attempt; jetting moves nothing. The machine is hitting a wall, not a clog.
• The camera's dead end. Footage ends at rubble, deformation or soil, with the locator marking the exact surface point and depth above the failure.
• Sudden onset. Unlike buildup's slow slide, a collapse often arrives abruptly, sometimes with a triggering event: heavy vehicles, excavation nearby, a hard freeze.
• Ground evidence. A depression or soft spot over the line marks soil migrating into the broken pipe: the surface confessing what happened below.
• Material context. End-stage Orangeburg, rust-thinned cast iron and shear-cracked clay are the usual suspects; a collapse in such a line raises the question of the rest of the run.

From confirmation to flowing again:

• Confirm and locate. Camera to the obstruction, locator on the head: surface mark and depth. Where the camera cannot enter at all, access from the other direction or at cleanouts brackets the failure.
• Utility locates, then excavate. Marked utilities, then a targeted dig to the failed section. The located point keeps the hole surgical instead of exploratory.
• Rebuild the section. Collapsed material comes out; new pipe goes in on compacted bedding with proper couplings to the sound ends. The bedding matters as much as the pipe: collapse repair on soft fill is a rerun scheduled.
• Camera the rest before closing. With the section open and flow restored, the remainder of the line gets inspected: one collapse in a failing material is often the first, and the trench is the cheapest place to learn that.
