  • Orange-brown staining. Iron, dissolved or particulate, staining fixtures and laundry; manganese adds black-brown notes.

What should well water be tested for before treatment?

Minimum: coliform bacteria, nitrates, hardness, iron, manganese, pH and TDS, plus sulfide if it smells and regional additions (arsenic, radon, PFAS) where geology suggests. Design from a certified panel; retest periodically thereafter.

Can one system fix iron, sulfur, hardness and bacteria?

One train, yes; one box, no. Each problem has its stage, assembled in the right order. Combination media exist for related problems, but 'whole-house cure-all' marketing is where treatment budgets go to die.

What if the well tests positive for bacteria?

First response: retest to confirm and shock-chlorinate the well; find the entry cause: cap, casing, surface water. Recurring positives argue for continuous disinfection (commonly UV) after appropriate pre-treatment, because UV needs clear water to work.

Will treatment equipment hurt my water pressure?

Every stage costs some pressure; a properly sized train costs little. Undersized filters and neglected media beds are the real pressure thieves. Sizing against the well's flow and honest maintenance intervals are the guardrails.

Why does the water change with the seasons?

Water tables move: spring melt and drought shift chemistry, sediment and sometimes bacteria risk. Seasonal swings are normal for wells, and one more reason treatment design starts from tests taken in more than one season where problems are marginal.
