How a Plumber Diagnoses the Problem
The testing framework:
- The annual base panel. Coliform bacteria and nitrates: the two markers health guidance puts on a yearly rhythm, because both can change without any change in taste.
- The full characterization. Hardness, iron, manganese, pH, TDS and sulfide: the panel that designs treatment and explains stains, smells and scale. Run at baseline and after any significant change.
- Regional additions. Arsenic, radon, uranium, and increasingly PFAS. Geology and local history decide these; state health departments publish what your county should worry about.
- Event-triggered testing. After flooding, nearby construction, well work, a new baby in the house, or any sudden change in taste, odor or clarity. Events reset the schedule.

Why sampling procedure makes or breaks results:
- Sterile technique for bacteria. Coliform samples demand sterile bottles, a flamed or sanitized tap, proper flushing and cold transit on deadline. Contamination in sampling reads exactly like contamination in the well.
- The right tap, the right state. Samples represent the well only if drawn ahead of softeners and filters (or deliberately after them, to test the treatment). The point of draw is part of the question being asked.

Can I use a home test kit?
As a screening tool between proper tests, kits have a place; hardness and pH strips are honest enough. For bacteria, health decisions, or anything a transaction depends on, certified-lab results are the standard. Kits flag questions, labs answer them.
What if the test comes back positive for bacteria?
