The well's depth, its standing water level, how far that level draws down under pumping, and what the well can actually yield: those numbers select submersible versus jet, size the motor, and set the drop pipe's length before brand names enter the conversation. Installation is the last step of a calculation.

  • Flow and head arithmetic. Household demand sets flow; lift from the pumping level plus house elevation plus pressure target sets head. The pump lands on its curve where those cross. Oversizing cycles and overdraws the well; undersizing starves the shower.
  • The downhole hardware. Drop pipe rated for the hang, submersible cable sized to the run, check valve placement, a pitless adapter sealing the buried exit, torque arrestors and safety rope: the parts nobody sees and everybody depends on.
  • The receiving end. Pressure tank and switch matched to the new pump's flow, or a variable-speed constant-pressure controller where steady pressure is the goal, plus protection against dry-run on wells with modest yield.

How is a well pump sized?

From the well's numbers and the house's: pumping water level plus elevation plus target pressure gives the head; household demand gives the flow; the pump is chosen where its curve meets both. A pump sized to the well's yield also protects the well itself; outpumping the source is a failure mode, not a feature.

Submersible or jet pump: which do I need?

The water level decides. Deep wells take submersibles pushing from below: quieter, more efficient, the modern default. Shallow wells within suction reach can use jet pumps mounted above. It is physics first; the preference conversation only exists where depth allows both.

Does a new pump need a new pressure tank?

Not automatically. A healthy, correctly sized tank carries over. But the tank and switch must match the new pump's flow, and an old undersized tank will cycle a new pump to an early death. The design checks the pair together; the well-tank pages handle a tank retiring on its own.

Can I get constant, city-like pressure from a well?

Does the pump installer also drill the well?

No. Drilling and well construction are a separately regulated trade. This scope begins at an existing cased well and covers everything from the pump down the hole to the pressure system in the house. On new-well projects the two trades coordinate; they are not the same license.
