Softener failures announce themselves at the taps (spots return, soap quits lathering), but the fault almost always lives in one of four places: the salt, the brine path, the control valve, or (least often) the resin itself. The repair discipline is checking them in that order, because the list runs cheap to expensive, and because the most replaced component in this machine, the resin bed, is also the most often falsely accused.

  • Hardness returns. Spots on glasses and stiff laundry after years of soft water: the headline symptom with half a dozen possible authors, which is why testing precedes blaming.
  • Salt that never drops. A tank staying full for months means brine is not being made or drawn, the signature of a salt bridge or a clogged injector, not of a machine 'using less'.
  • A brine tank full of water. Standing water above the salt points at a float, drain or injector problem interrupting the refill-and-draw cycle.
  • Regeneration theater. Cycles that run at wrong hours, stall mid-sequence, or run endlessly: the control valve narrating its own fault codes in behavior.
  • Leaks and pressure loss. Water at the valve head or bypass, or a house-wide pressure drop after installation years: the plumbing side of the machine asking for attention.

The fault list, cheap to expensive:

  • Salt bridge and mushing. A hard crust suspending salt above the water, or a paste clogging the tank's floor: the tank looks full while brine never forms. The most common and least expensive finding in softener repair.
  • Injector and brine path. The venturi that draws brine is a small orifice with strong opinions about sediment; a clogged injector, kinked brine line or stuck float quietly disables regeneration.
  • Drain restrictions. A blocked or kinked drain line backs the cycle up. Regeneration needs its exit, and the symptom set mimics valve failure.
  • Control valve wear. Pistons, seals and spacers wear on machines that cycle for a decade; motors and timers fail. Serviceable on most models, which is the repair that saves the unit.
  • Resin, lastly. True resin exhaustion or iron fouling shows as capacity shrinking despite clean tests everywhere else. A rebed is real repair, but it is the last diagnosis, not the first.

How a Plumber Diagnoses the Problem

The order of investigation:

  • Two samples first. Raw and treated hardness measured: treated water still hard confirms a treatment failure; treated water soft while complaints continue points elsewhere entirely. A bypass valve left open ends more service calls than any part.
  • The salt inspection. Bridge probed, mushing checked, brine level read: thirty seconds that resolves the most common fault before anything opens.
  • Watch a forced regeneration. The cycle run manually and observed (brine draw, backwash, refill), with each stage exonerating or convicting its own component list.
  • Programming against reality. Settings verified against measured hardness and actual usage. Softeners drift out of tune when households change, and 'broken' is sometimes 'configured for a different family'.
  • Repair versus replace, honestly. Valve rebuilds and injector service are economical; a cracked tank or non-serviceable valve on an aging unit routes to the replacement page with the diagnosis attached.

Why is my water softener not using salt?

Usually a salt bridge (a crust holding the salt above the water so brine never forms) or a clogged injector failing to draw it. Both are quick, inexpensive repairs. The tank staying full is diagnostic gold: the machine is skipping its meals, not dieting.

Why is the water hard again?

Six suspects: bypass open, salt bridge, injector or brine-path clog, drain restriction, valve fault, or, least often, exhausted resin. The raw-versus-treated test plus an observed regeneration sorts them in one visit. Buying resin first is paying for the most expensive guess.

Why is the brine tank full of water?

The refill-and-draw cycle got interrupted: a stuck float overfilling, an injector too clogged to draw brine back out, or a drain problem stalling the sequence. It names its own repair once the cycle is watched, and it is rarely the disaster it looks like.

Can resin be restored or replaced without a new softener?

Yes. Iron-fouled resin sometimes responds to cleaning treatments, and a genuine rebed (new resin in the existing tank) costs a fraction of a new system. The prerequisite is a real resin diagnosis: capacity shrinking with every other component tested healthy.

Can the softener cause low water pressure?

It can. Fouled resin beds and failing internals throttle the whole house, since every drop passes through. The bypass valve is the instant test: pressure restored in bypass convicts the softener; unchanged pressure acquits it and sends the search to the pressure-diagnosis pages.

When is replacement better than repair?

Cracked tanks, control valves without service parts, repeated repairs on an aging unit, or water chemistry the system was never designed for. Valve rebuilds and brine-path service favor repair; structural failures favor the replacement page, and the diagnosis travels with you either way.
