Bathtub Repair

The tells, and what each accuses:

• Leak only while draining. The ceiling stain that grows during and after emptying accuses the drain shoe and its connection: water passing a failed seal on its way out.
• Leak only at deep fills. Damage appearing after long, full baths points at the overflow gasket, a part that leaks exclusively when water reaches it, which is the clue and the alibi in one.
• Drips from the spout. A tub spout that dribbles after shutoff is the valve talking: worn cartridge or seats, the same failure family as any dripping faucet.
• The lazy diverter. Water splitting between spout and showerhead means the diverter no longer seals. Annoying at first, wasteful always, and a standard repair.
• Moisture with no schedule. Dampness unrelated to tub use points behind the wall, supply-side territory, investigated with the leak-detection discipline rather than tub tools.

The staged test that names the culprit:

• Stage one: run the valve. Water on, drain closed but empty tub. Moisture appearing now implicates valve, spout or their connections, before the tub's own hardware is even in play.
• Stage two: fill shallow, then drain. A modest fill released. Leakage during this stage convicts the drain shoe and slip connections, the workhorse joints under the tub.
• Stage three: fill to the overflow. Water brought deliberately to the overflow's mouth. New leakage here isolates the overflow gasket, tested last because it only participates at depth.
• Access chosen by verdict. Many waste-and-overflow repairs work through the tub's openings and existing access panels. Where the ceiling below must open, it opens over a named, tested fault, not as exploration.
