The published number comes with a date on it: the city's Drinking Water Quality Report for 2002 answered the hardness question directly, at two hundred to three hundred parts per million (eleven point seven to seventeen and a half grains per gallon), and no city or regional report since has carried the parameter, so that published range, shown above at its midpoint, remains the newest official figure there is. The supply is the North Platte River in two forms: about a third drawn as surface water and treated at the regional plant Casper shares with neighboring systems, where it is clarified, filtered and ozonated but never softened. That is water at the top of the scale-forming range, and it explains why softener installation carries a Casper contractor class of its very own.
