Polybutylene Pipe Replacement

What puts polybutylene on the table:

• Gray flexible tubing stamped PB2110. A non-rigid, sometimes curved plastic supply pipe, usually gray, sometimes silver or black, never on drains or vents; PB2110 was the material code, Qest and Vanguard the US brands. Rigid white plastic with glued joints is PVC or CPVC.
• A report that names it. An ASHI Reporter article noted in 2001 that some hazard insurers were backing away from PB-piped homes. Today the flag comes from an inspector, underwriter or buyer: nothing leaks, but the deal has a line item.

Why the verdict is replacement, not repair:

• Polyacetal fittings. The molded gray fittings in early PB systems were polyacetal (ASTM F845). The Plastics Pipe Institute attributes most PB failures to them: they resist hot chlorinated water poorly and crack.
• Chlorine and the tubing itself. Some tubing failures trace to hot chlorinated water, others to installation errors such as kinking, gouges and cuts. No chlorine-resistance test existed for PB; PEX must now pass ASTM F2023.
• Two fitting generations, both in the class. Acetal inserts with aluminum crimp rings came first; copper inserts and rings arrived about 1986, per Pillar To Post. The settlement class covered plastic and metal insert fittings alike.
• No successor parts. Resin supply to North America stopped in 1995/1996 and ASTM D3309 was withdrawn in 2010. The 2021 International Plumbing Code, where adopted, omits polybutylene from Table 605.4; the District of Columbia deleted PB from its tables in 2008.

How the visit scopes the job:

• Confirm the material at every visible point. Water heater connections, fixture stops, laundry box, attic and crawl space. Print line and fittings get read, not color, since PEX is usually red or blue and also crimps.
• Interior or service line. PB was also used in the underground service from the water company, in blue, gray or black. That run is scoped under Water Lines; this visit stops at the entry.
• Fitting generation and failure history. Acetal fittings with aluminum rings, or copper inserts with copper rings; which leaked, where, how often. Kinks, gouges and cuts from installation get read too.
• Partial or whole, then tested. A PB island in a copper house is a section job with sound pipe at both ends; PB throughout has no sound point to stop at. The finished section is tested under water pressure for at least 15 minutes (2021 International Plumbing Code 312.5, where adopted).

What the scope states and what writes the number:

• Transition fittings, not PEX fittings on PB. PEX tubing runs SDR 9 and PB SDR 11, so insert fittings are not interchangeable; a PB-to-PEX joint uses a purpose-made transition coupling in 1/2 or 3/4 inch.
• Slab-routed runs. PB under a slab is normally abandoned in place and the new line rerouted overhead through attic or wall cavities rather than cut out of concrete; trenching becomes ceiling openings.
• Permit, structure and patching. San José, California requires a plumbing permit for a repipe, defined there as replacing the interior water lines, plus a building permit when shear walls or structural members are cut. Who patches drywall is stated, not assumed.
