How do I know the trap needs cleaning or repair?
Cleaning is a measurement: grease and solids depth against the trap's capacity, with many authorities using a 25%-full threshold. Repair announces itself at inspection: bent or missing baffles, failed gaskets, damaged lids, checked every time the trap is opened.
What is the difference between a grease trap and an interceptor?
Same job, different scale: 'trap' usually means the smaller under-sink or near-fixture units; 'interceptor' the large in-ground vaults serving whole kitchens. Local code language varies. Capacity and location matter more than the label.
Who sets the cleaning frequency?
Two forces: the sewer authority's rules (thresholds, minimum frequencies, manifests) and the kitchen's actual grease production. The compliant answer is whichever is stricter. Measured accumulation data usually satisfies both and stops over- or under-servicing.
Can a damaged baffle be repaired?
Usually yes. Baffles, gaskets and fittings are serviceable parts, and repairing them restores the trap's separation ability. A cracked or corroded tank body is different: that is replacement territory.
